The early Tiger I appeared on the Eastern Front and North African Front at the end of the war in 1942, shocking Allied soldiers. While inheriting the traditional vertical style of German tanks, it was the strongest heavy tank at the time it appeared, with a powerful 88mm gun and up to 100mm of heavy armor. The early model was characterized by its heavy style, with a large cylindrical commander's cupola, a turret with smoke grenade launchers and a large pistol port, and an air cleaner at the rear of the vehicle. Approximately 200 vehicles were produced by June 1943.
